Buying A Pontoon Boat

One of the primary reasons for this website is to help people decide on the best pontoon boat for their needs, and then match them up with the most convenient of our participating dealers.

Tips on choosing the right boat

The main things to consider when choosing a pontoon boat are:

  1. Construction quality and pontoon capabilites
  2. The main activity you want the pontoon boat to perform.

1: Construction Quality

Construction quality and pontoon boat capabilities are well covered elsewhere in this site. We suggest you take a look at the Southland pontoons page for an overview of quality considerations, and the pontoon advantages page for an understanding of the strengths of pontoon boats over mono-hulls.

2: Activity / Purpose

Pontoon boats are very versatile craft that can be customised to better perform specific roles and activities. The primary role you want the boat to perform will influence the model you select. Roles suited to Pontoon boats are:

Camping Holidays Weekenders

If the main purpose of the pontoon boat is to use it as a 'houseboat' or weekender, then you need a vessel with a camper top covering the whole boat, a sofa bed, a table and plenty of storage spaces

Look for full camper tops that end at the very front bumper and covers all the floor. Also ensure that the canvas used is marine grade with a long warranty (at least 4 years) against fading and deterioration.

Swimming and Diving

Look for models with easy access to the foredeck.

Also ensure that side ladder options are available for the pontoon boat for added flexibility.

Leisure and Parties

Select larger models with uncluttered flat floor areas, larger diameter tubes, multi-chambers within the tubes (at least 4), quality flooring, and marine grade carpets. This will provide a very stable platform that will allow you and your family and friends to move about with few restrictions.

Estuary and Lake Fishing

Large flat floor areas and models with fishing seats are things to look for or option. Fish cleaning is easier with room and stabilty, and with your BBQ installed on board, you can fish, clean and eat without leaving the boat.

Water Skiing /Water Activities
People think wrongly that it is impossible to waterski behind a pontoon boat. A quick browse around this site will show otherwise. Engine capacity, engine box construction and hull design all contibute to the speed capability of a pontoon boat. The latest triple tube models further enehance the speed and performance capability of the pontoon.
